  3. MARS EXPERTS GATHER TO DEBATE THE QUESTION, "ARE WE ALONE?"

  5. CAPE CANAVERAL, FL (OCT. 26) REUTER - Scientists from the
  6. United States, the Soviet Union and Europe will gather at
  7. the weekend to explore the possibilities, or dismiss the
  8. theories, of life on the ''angry red planet,'' Mars.
  9.  
  10. Experts are divided into three camps -- those who think Mars
  11. never could have supported life, those who suspect some type
  12. of microscopic bacteria do live on the planet, and those who
  13. believe that life did exist on Mars but is now extinct.
  14.  
  15. ''We expect some fireworks because of the widely differing
  16. opinions about the existence of life on Mars,'' said Dr Imre
  17. Friedmann, organiser of the conference at Florida State
  18. University. Friedmann has published research raising the
  19. possibility that primitive Martian life forms lived and
  20. died, similar to lichens found thriving in Antarctic rocks.

  22. Finding an answer to the question ''Are we alone?'' is
  23. essential before humans can set foot on Mars, scientists
  24. say, to protect both human explorers and the Martian
  25. environment from alien intrusions.

  27. President George Bush set a goal of 2019 for US astronauts
  28. to land on Mars. The Soviets want to get cosmonauts there
  29. nine years sooner. Both plan unmanned life-seeking
  30. preparatory missions in the next few years.

  32. Most knowledge about Mars has come from the US National
  33. Aeronautics and Space Administration's two Viking probes
  34. launched in 1975.

  36. From orbit, the spacecraft photographed polar ice caps and
  37. dry lake beds and stream channels. Automated life-seeking
  38. landers analysed the atmosphere and surface composition but
  39. turned up only inconclusive evidence of biochemical
  40. reactions in the soil.

  42. That knowledge is not enough for scientists who want to know
  43. why Earth and Mars evolved so differently in spite of their
  44. relatively close size and position in the solar system.

  46. Exobiologists, specialists in the hunt for life beyond
  47. Earth, say water -- the necessary element to sustain life --
  48. is frozen at the poles and flowed across the red planet
  49. three to four billion years ago.

  51. They say Mars had a more Earth-like climate and active
  52. volcanoes then, too. But the planet's interior cooled
  53. quickly and its crust stopped moving. Unlike Earth, Mars is
  54. seismically dead and without heat to power plate tectonics,
  55. it cannot recycle life-sustaining elements.
